The Iowa Great Lakes Sanitary District collects waste water from Orleans, Spirit Lake, Okoboji, Arnolds Park, West Okoboji, Milford, Wahpeton and some of the incorporated areas around the Iowa Great Lakes. If you live in Spirit Lake, Okoboji, Arnolds Park or Milford you may see a bill from the City. This is because those cities have their own sewer systems that eventually bring their waste water to the Sanitary Districts system. The waste water bill from the City is to pay maintenance and operations of their sewer system. The Sanitary District bill is to pay for the maintenance and operations of the Districts collection system and to treat the waste water.
The Sanitary District bills twice a year in February and August. The rate per unit is a $30 base charge every six months and $1.35 per thousand gallons used. The base charge is paid ahead, so if your current billing is for July through December, the base charge you are paying on that bill is for January through June. The usage is charged based on the water used during the six month billing period. The water usage is provided to the Sanitary District by the local water utilities. If the property is on a well, the Sanitary District has a formula to determine the water usage for billing.
The last rate change for the Sanitary District was in December of 2007.
